Subject: Re: Now a new problem....leaky power steering rack...

Uhm, along with much else, I offer the following from Wikipedia :

Dry Steering is the act of turning the steering wheel or rotating the steer wheels of a vehicle on the Z axis by some other means, whilst the vehicle is not in motion (stationary).

This action puts strain on the rack and pinion, pump, tie rods, bearings, and especially causes undue wear to the steer wheels, and can be exceptionally difficult in the absence of power assisted steering.

Oh, and I'm sure this one will get a bit of controversy, but, as I began, above, I was taught certain rules as a wee lad (though I'm sure I am still unable to carry proudly, the male torch)...... Don't stick your thumbs or any part of your hands 'into' the steering wheel while driving. Don't keep the clutch pedal depressed while sitting at a light, stopped, etc....put it in neutral and let the clutch out. Don't drive with your hands/hand on top of the steering wheel or you will over-correct in an emergency maneuver, etc, etc.......and there are many more. In any case, I was brought up to not drive like a girl (sorry, usual disclaimer here) and turning the steering wheel while not moving is one of those things you don't do unless........... Cheers. Miguel
