In the process of replacing exhaust system. Kind of tough… original exhaust pipes, nuts and bolts rusted pretty well, etc.

Here is my question: is there a certain configuration of the studs/nuts and bolts that hold the crossover pipes on the cylinders? Right now, Cylinder #1 has 1 stud (upper) & 1 bolt (lower) Cylinder #2 has 2 studs (both upper & lower) Cylinder #3 has 1 bolt (upper) & 1 stud (lower) Cylinder #4 has 2 bolts (both upper & lower)

I am asking because I am replacing all studs/nuts and bolts with stainless steel, so, 21 years from now I may not have such a hard time taking them apart .. haha! ETKA and Bentley are not very clear on that.

Also, it looks like the bolts should be 30mm and the studs should be 40mm. True?

My advice is to use only 30mm bolts in all locations. This allows easy replacement of a flange gasket or removal of a head if need be in the future. I think the only reason VW used studs on the one head was for ease of assembly on the assembly line.
