Try to turn the idle adjustment screw CCW half a turn to one or two
turns. This should make some improvement for the idle. If the idle becomes
too fast then turn it back half a turn. Usually this will improve
horse power quite a bit.
There are several things to check:
1. AFM connector. If the contacts are dirty they may cause idle to be
rough.
2. Check air leak at the joint of intake manifold and cylinder head.
3. Check air leak at the throttle body connection to intake manifold
and from AFM.
4. Check ignition components, such as coil, distributor, rotor, wiring
and spark plugs.
5. Check O2 sensor.
6. Check ECU connector.
7. Bad AFM is a possibility.
8. Bad injectors?
There are many other possibilities still of course.
Go to a You Pull type of junk yard that has Vanagons. Pick up some spare
parts, such as ECU, AFM, throttle, injectors, coil, distributor, etc.
This won't be a huge investment but will prove very handy for
troubleshooting.
