Both my 83.5 (westy) and 84 (7 seater) have manual transmission.
I drive consistently at 65 - 70 MPH on flat freeway. I may slow down
a little driving against headwind or going uphill. But I will drive
at 75 going down hill. I do not race with anyone but I will pass
any slower cars on the freeway.
My 83.5 westy used to get 17-18 mpg in town and 19-20 on freeway
before engine rebuild. Now it is like 19-20 in town and 22-24 on
freeway after engine rebuild with 4k miles of break-in.
After rebuilding my 1.9 WBX I found that the transmission is the main
cause of slow acceleration. The engine has the torque but I simply can
not shift fast enough to keep up with the traffic when starting from
a red light turning to green. In slow traffic in the city I can accelerate
slowly from 25 MPH with the tranny in the 4th gear without shifting
up to the 3rd gear and with very minimum pedal. I only need to shift
up to the 3rd if hard acceleration is needed.
