Folks, I'm trying to eliminate the belt screeching noise from my 1.9 WITHOUT excessively tightening them, as I recently installed a new water pump and new alternator and would like to keep them a while. I've tightened the (new) belts so they spin what needs to be spun, no tighter, and then applied "belt dressing" for more tackiness. But the belt dressing disappears after a while and the belts start making noise again. Does anyone have a solution for this? Overtightening them is easy, but I want to keep them as loose as possible without screeching. Any way to roughen up the pulleys so they grip better? Or? I'm convinced overtightened belts is a major cause of premature water pump failure, especially.
