It does work if you have the time.

I went to the local AP and picked up a suction gun. Take the bottles under with me, open one at a time, suck the fluid into the gun and squirt it into the filler hole.

The gun holds about 1/2 quart at a time, so it goes pretty quick. I tried one of the bottle mounted pumps. It worked, but took too much work to do it.

Works fine, better if you can raise the funnel higher.

BTW, 90 weight _gear oil_ is about the same viscosity as 40 weight _engine_ oil. SAE J300 and J306 are the specifications. 90 gear oil is a 13.5-18.5 centistokes @ 100C. 40 weight motor oil is 12.5-16.3 centistokes @ 100C.
