I am not aware anyone has any issues with durability of stock Vanagon 14" alloys. Audi on the other hand has issued a formal notice that the 15" wheels used on the 100/200/5000 car line are not properly rated for a fully-laden Vanagon. Perhaps you were not aware that VW manufactured 15" alloys for the T3's (aka Vanagon). I bought several sets from a local importer a couple complete with new Michelin tires for $350 per set. Just as you found a set of Audi alloys for cheap, I can say the same for having found Vanagon alloy wheels in excellent condition.

YMMV,

BenT
