Don't know if it is of any help at all, but years ago I owned a Type 2 in
the UK.  I had a similar problem.  Seemed like a serious problem.  It turned
out to be lack of lubrication in one of you "golfball thingies", the one on
the floor.

Hi all...
I've lost the abiltity to shift gears. Was working fine this morning
but after an hour and a half freeway drive I shifted down to third to
go up a hill, and couldn't get back into fourth. We've pulled over
have let things cool off, and shifting is still not possible when
stationary. I've got 1st ad 3rd. That's it. I've been under the car to
gently assist the shift linkage but I want to be sure I'm assisting in
the right direction.
Air cooled transmission with the two golfball thingies on the linkage.
