I see your point of view! just so you know, and i understand your situation... putting a AMC head on one side and an old VW one on the other side is NOT the best thing (CR will be different)... but it will work, engine may shake more than usual. Anyway, i won't bug you with that because i understand your situation... By the way, my floor is NOT made of white ceramic, believe me, i wish, my floor is worse than yours!!! he he he.

As for that lower O-ring... even if the engine is still ÌN the van, on the

horizontal, it's easy to replace that lower O-ring.. the page you are showing on my side is old stuff, look at this one instead: http://www.benplace.com/vanagon_engine3.htm

On that page, there is a video that show how to change that O-ring, no need to be at the vertical to do so.

The ONLY thing you need to do when removing the lower O-ring is to put THAT cylinder in TDC (closer to the head position - Top Dead Center), then, you can pull the sleeve/cylinder/barel out.. just enough to remove that O-RIng, about 1/2 in out of the water jacket, move it out slowly... watch that piston pin from the side, when you see it... STOP.

Why i'm i telling you to change both O-ring, because you need to change one anyway, why not do the other one!!!

Bob is right in some ways, that lower O-ring stay (in general) pretty soft and i guess could be re-use! Me, it's a no go! i don't want to take ANY chance with this one )oil in coolant, coolant in oil)... period, maybe it would hold but i don't care, it's a 15 minutes job...

I hope that answer your question.
