Subject: Fuse holder and relay bracket
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="windows-1250"

I have an ’82 Vanagon (camper) which I have driven daily since ‘84.

For years I have struggled with the dog’s breakfast of the fuse holder and relay bracket (or whatever VW called it). I have had all sorts of electrical problems that I have traced back to this or the nearby earths.

On one occasion I disconnected all wires from the fuse holder and bathed the brass ends of wires and the fuse holder itself in acetic acid (vinegar). I rinsed in water and then methylated spirits (?rubbing alcohol?) before careful drying. This did a great job for a few years, but the problems are arising again.

It is a fiddley job and a difficult place to play.

PART of the issue is a small water leak through the windscreen that occasionally drops water onto the area.

Has anyone replaced the fuse and relay setup with anything better? I have added a number of other electrical circuits to my van, but all that is nice and clean, dry and convenient under the front passenger seat. I don’t feel like running all those wires to the same location and would be interested to hear of others’ solutions to problems like these. Would a setup out of a later van help? I suspect I’d have to lengthen all wires anyway.

Any help appreciated

Dave
