Baja is a great place and far too large to describe in any detail on the
list. It is plenty safe as far as I am concerned. The farther south you
go the safer it is, IMHO. The border areas are less safe, just because
they are more crowded and composed of a more transient population. The
paved roads are generally better than ever and any vehicle can go to
most places without difficulty unless it has rained recently. 4wd is
useful in more remote areas and a big advantage at the beach camps. 2wd
Vanagons can get to most camping areas, just not to some of the more
private camp sites. To see the real Baja, you need to get at least an
hour south of San Felipe on the East coast and an hour south of San
Quintin on the West coast. There are fun places closer than that but
they don't have the same feel.
Baja is changing fast due to better economic conditions for Mexicans and
also because so many baby boomers are building places there. Truly
deserted beaches are not as common anymore. Cabo? Forget it, might as
well go to Disneyland or your local sports bar on Super Bowl Sunday.
Lots of better spots on both coasts to explore and camp at. I see Westys
there fairly often but most are not list members.
The biggest thing is to forget your fears and just go.
