I have some background on this The European 112 Hp engine it had a10 to 1
compression ratio this by it self would I have come to understand accounted
for approximately a 4 % increase in power IF you had 98 octane fuel to go
with the 10 to 1 compression ratio. The European digijet 112 HP engine Also
was not set up for a O2 sensor due to the fact that the Gas intended for
this application was leaded fuel O2 sensors and leaded fuels dont mix well.
No O2 sensor is the major difference in the wiring diagram best as I know
and I run the European ECU in my US model digijet van and pass emissions no
problem. I Have bought and still have for sale some of these European
didgijet ECUs. Current Pricing $200
I have also spent mega bucks on chassis dyno testing ( back when ) using my
big valve engine in my 84 Campa and a stock 84 van blue bell with a ported
but other wise stock engine as my base line. The base line van Blue bell
with 30 K on the mostly stock engine made 75 Hp at the rear wheels all day
every time we did a dyno run. I did not test the European ECU on it much to
my disappointment as I look back. The Boston Bob big valve Campa with a new
fresh engine had mixed readings with no numbers I am willing to publish.
My conclusions evolved over time as I considered the findings and
differences of old Blue bell and the big valve Campa engine. One of the
differences worth pointing out was the Campa big valve engine made wild HP
numbers in the first run or two while it warmed up. But as it idled and
changes or checking of tie downs and timing where made the engine lost power
in a large way on the next dyno runs. I suggest that several factors where
at work after much consideration and review of the differences in the
engines. The Big valve engine was new and tight the rings had not seated to
it made a little more heat sitting at idle. The radiator some distance from
the dang engine and can account for swings in the engine coolant, engine
compartment and air intake temps remember the van was not moving. This would
be for me one consideration for the drop in power of the newer engine. The
other component only came to my attention as I have just swapped the engine
in the 84 Campa to a stock rebuilt longblock with all the new fixings so as
to put it up for sale. That difference was that I never used the insulators
for the fuel lines in the Campa big valve engine. Think what you want but I
have had many years of dyno testing and have seen what a difference in fuel
and engine compartment temp can do to power. The two final points I would
make is that the European ECU had a consistent jump of 13 HP ( again at the
rear wheels ) in the 84 Campa engine regardless of the any other factors as
I swapped them back and forth during the dyno runs. And in every piston I
have seen from a Dj 10 to 1 piston it had signs of detonation from the lack
of octane. Signs of detonation as I define them are flecks of piston missing
from the tops of the piston like to was on the receiving end of a shot gun
blast. Just email me if you feel the need to see what that looks like and I
have a pic or two that I can send you
hope this helps
long winded in Wayland and
going faster miles an hour with the radio on
I remain
