From the factory, Syncros had the tranny to engine flange and the starter
sealed with silicone sealant. This was along the lines of the air intake
being piped up high and the distributor was in a bag with elastic ties. The
engine to tranny flange also had a rubber type flap valve at the bottom.
Most of this was to avoid water quickly entering those spaces while crossing
streams. The tranny, front diff, and the bell housing space was also vented
higher connected with tubes. The hole at the top of the engine should be
closed off with a removable plug. I do not know if they are still available.
