I have used tire gauges for this many times. Just cut the Shraeder valve end off the gauge hose and extend it with a longer piece of hose. Then keep the gauge raised above the engine so no fuel gets into it and an air pocket stays at the gauge. Never press the release button since that will let fuel get closer to the gauge.
