Neil,

I've been very satisfied with an iRiver mp3 player for several years now (mine's an IFP 899). FM reception is very good. Probably worth 20 bucks on a good day on ebay.

Fortunately I resisted the temptation to install a CD player way back when, so I can run a tape adapter which supplies my aux input to the ash tray, where the mp3 player normally lives (close the ash tray lid and it's out of sight).

While camping, a Logitech portable speaker gives good sound for about 40 hours off AA batteries (rechargeable).

A low cost solution that avoids the 2and battery entirely.
