Subject: Remembering the First Bus

Mine was a '67 Deluxe. It had the gas heater and I purchased it for $500.00. It was in very good shape, except for the drivers side windshield was cracked, the cargo doors were rusty at the bottom, and the PO said "it leaks a little oil" - I think I went through 4 quarts of oil in the 25 mile drive from his house! After finding the oil cooler seals pretty much shot, I started hunting for a replacement windshield. Found an ad in the Want Ad by a kid parting out another '67. Called him and we agreed on $15.00 for the glass, but when I got to his house I thought about the cargo doors-the ones on his parts bus were perfect-but I only had about $20.00 on me-didn't matter he said, it was going to the junk yard end of the week-I ended up taking tons of stuff off that bus for $20.00! Can't remember how many miles I put on that '67, but the funny part is I bought it as a work beater, so I wouldn't trash my new custom Chevy van (remember the custom vans from the late 70's-incredibly tacky, b ut fun, interiors and wild paint jobs?I had one) How times have changed! If I still had those two vans, I'd be protecting the VW and driving the hell out of the Chevy. I sold it for $500.00, and figured I'd done pretty good, all I did was replace the oil cooler seals and the brakes while I owned it. Jeff
