My 84 Westy, with the 91 Synco 2.1L motor lives again. and no blood dripping
from the rear main / Flywheel seal!
I wanted to post a few speed bumps I encountered in the seal replacement.
Also, I wanted to thank everyone from the list who provided insight, and
parts!
Jonce was a real trooper, as I interrupted his Sunday in search of the
proper 10mm think rear main seal used for the manual transmission models.
Thank you Jonce for breaking apart a kit, and saving me as the local auto
parts stores and the VW parts store north of me could only get the 12MM
seals used in the Automatic Transmission applications.
Ben in Canada was very helpful as well, providing advice and P-mail like
crazy, as I attempted to track down the source of my oil leak.
The discovery was that the sand blast media made it into the bell housing
through the hole at the top of the motor. (Does anyone have an extra plug
for that hole?).
And Boston Bob's flywheel replacement video was extremely helpful as well!
I followed it, but still had a problem which the thrust washer slipping
down. It crushed the washer, and I had to get a replacement (two in a pack,
so I have a spare now). Hine sight, use Vaseline to hold it in place, not
motor oil, and torque the flywheel bolts to 10ft lbs, and try turning the
flywheel by hand. If it doesn't turn, pull it apart and check that the
thrust washer didn't slip. You may wish to have a spare 10mm seal just in
case. This problem added a week to my repair, but also allowed me to make a
visit to Jonce's place. He had a few extra trim parts I needed, and I
always like checking out all the cool custom shades he makes for Vanagons.
I LOVE the windshield cover I got from him, much better than using the
interior front curtain.
After 20 years of ownership of my 84 Westy, I can truly say it is running
and looking its all time best! Just a few details, and I'll be 110%. I
remember all the problems I had in the past, before the internet and this
list, with so much trial and error. Now, thank to this list, and the great
suppliers who stock the necessary parts, I can honestly say that Vanagon
Ownership has never been better!
