Re Vanagons not being on the list.
You might notice there are no cars or vans mentioned...the list is for CARS.
Also..this list.....i think it's really the authors peculiar focus on 'not
very successful' cars....and he makes little mention of actual mechanical
weak areas and so forth.
Take the DeLorean, he mentions it's underpowered, but that's it. Then he
goes into the reputation of Mr. Delorean himself - so it's almost like it's
a bit like a Hollywood nasty rumors list or something semi-sleazy.
Anyway....were they to talk about cooling system issues, or major weak
areas, in all cars, trucks, and vans - The vanagon would be right up there.
See what Consumer Reports in their pink/black dots listings and ratings of
cars has for a vanagon -
Somewhere around 5 years after waterboxer vanagons came out - I'm sure it's
not pretty.
I think it was Car & Driver mag that tested a vanagon, or a diesel vanagon -
they thought it was simply the worst thing ever sold here.
The Tappet Brothers....Click and Clack - I believe they think the vanagon is
a joke.
My point is, don't take too much pleasure in watercooled vanagons not being
on this list............the list itself is hokey, like one person's
opinion, and he doesn't even establish very well why some of the cars are
all that bad, like not mentioning mechanically and chronically weak areas
very much, and the list does not include trucks and vans.

People keep bringing up how vanagons aren't on this list. I mean, of
course they're not, right?
The major design flaw of the vanagons is the head gaskets, and still
many go 100k or even 200k between gasket jobs. Other than that, many
aspects of the vanagon seem very well designed. It's an incredibly
functional vehicle, whether comfortably hauling 7 passengers or camping
equipment, that gets relatively good gas mileage (decent even by today's
standards), and is relatively easy for a backyard mechanic to work on.
Did I mention it looks cool?
It seems most of the rest of its quirky mechanical reputation is due to
its rarity and novelty in this country (especially away from the west
coast)... your typical mechanic hasn't seen one before, and so has no
experience with them, making owning one a major pain if you can't do the
work yourself or are lucky enough to live next to a good vanagon mechanic.
Am I missing something here?
These are old vehicles. Of course they need some parts replaced. And
since there aren't many vanagons around, it's harder to find mechanics
who can do the work.
Am I just blinded by love?
