Mike, you are right, the ball cage opening is the same
width as the ball, but it is longer than the ball. The
Porsche 924 has a cage opening of about 24.5 x 17.5 mm
and the Type 2 is about 26 x 20 mm. That allows the
ball to travel 7 mm (924) versus 6 mm (Type 2) The
angle of the races is about the same in the joints as
far as I can tell. So the 924 can extend or bend a
little more before it binds. The type 2 joint is
limited to the lower articulation because of the 20 mm
ball size. Making the openings in the ball cage longer
doesn't work becuase there isn't enough material left
between the slots to enlarge them much.
Now the question is really: Is the advantage of more
articulation worth the disadvantage of a weaker joint
and faster wear?
