Of course, what Chris said.

But.. for every ten doom and gloom scenarios, you'll hear one good one.

I bought an 84 waterboxer in 1999 for $500.00. It wasn't running. So I connected the battery, filled up the expansion tank with antifreeze, and drove it, with heat issues, for a year. Bought a used engine from a friendly neighborhood list vendor $1000.00, installed it myself, did the clutch while I was in there. That's it. I drove the van for 5 years, three or four times a week, total price for 5 years, including oil filters... under 2 grand. Sold it to some enterprising young ... for $800 who spent the weekend compounding it out and waxing it, put armourall on the tires, and posted it on Craigslist for 1800.00 dollars spewing a whole bunch of lies.... Poor bastard who bought it.

So you roll the dice and get what you gets.
