OK - I got all of the coolant out of the van per Bentley's procedure and am going to spring for some VW Blue. I do remember what a pain and expense replacing pitted heads was. So, next question - how should I flush? If I stick a garden hose in there I'm going to introduce our nasty mineral laden San Diego water (>200 ppm TDS) into the system. Flush with distilled? Its cheap. Add any flushing products like Prestone's? Just say the heck with it and refill it??
