Joel, Mike, thanks for the info. That helped a lot. I'm still puzzled as to why the Porsche joint should have more articulation. It seems to me that with the smaller balls the 924 joint would wear faster, especially at larger angles. It also seems that the cage binds against the inner carrier at full extension. Maybe I put it together the wrong way - it came disassembled. Reinhard

According to http://www.924.org/parts/parts.htm , 924 CV joints _are_ bus joints (113 501 331D), but the p/n given is for a Type 4 joint. I think they're confused. According to http://www.doghouserepair.com/mall/description.php?ItemID=7824 , that part number uses 0.6875" diameter balls.

VW changed the balls in the Bus/Vanagon CV joints from 0.750" (19.04mm) to 20mm with p/n 251 598 101 in 12/1984 (see tech bulletin 87-01 @ http://www.vanagonparts.com/tech_bulletins.html ) VW no longer lists the .750 joint, it is the 20mm joint that VW now lists as a replacement for the older breadloaves and Vanagons, too.

Ratwell ( http://www.ratwell.com/technical/FAQ/FAQContent.html ) says this:

"Here is a list of maximum angles that the hub of the joint is allowed to move compared to other models:

"bus, 18 degrees "411, 22 degrees "Porsche 930, 28 degrees"
