I've been in a vanagon when the top pops, wasn't my van, i swear!

We were on the hwy, about 50 mph.

I can confirm it does make a startling noise, a real heart stopper. the top didn't go all the way up, the lip caught the air, the top got pushed up but then the wind pushed in the fabric which then held the top from going any further up. I'd guess it stayed at about halfway up or less.

What stopped it from going the whole way up? Just the low speed?

Yes, it's a thought I'm sure we all have had. I once had a hood go up on an old Volvo while driving 60 or so, and it's not an experience I'd like to repeat.
