I've heard this also, but have only seen evidence of worn lock tumblers on VW door locks, not the ignition. I've had three VWs with over 400k kms on the ignition lock and original VW key, no problems on the ignition, but a few door locks did get sketchy in later life. I prefer the VW keys for their strength, unlike wimpy GM truck keys that often break off in crappy GM door locks... and the ignition on those fail too - my Dad's is toast at 160k kms!
