This can be caused by a leaky capacitor inside the temperature gauge.
It's not easy to get to (changing gauges is easier) but the gauge face
can be removed (requires drilling) and the tiny wires unsoldered so that
the circuit board can be removed ... then turned over exposing the
capacitor.  Replacing it with a tantalum capacitor can be a permanent fix.
