Sam,

You might want to consider one of those aftermarket caps used on boats and now being offered up all over the place these days. They are really gas filler doors which are bolted on or riveted. See a sample pic at:

You can them keep your stock cap under it.

If push comes to shove, you can always have a front fender cutout and re-welded in place as original. I'm getting that done myself.
