Yes, I did write that many moons ago. Originally, the Vanagons did have springs inside the rear cylinders to push the pistons out. Golf/Jettas, etc also had them. ATE is the only supplier I know that is still installing them. If you go to the dealer, they will give you Brazilian cylinders without them.

During heat/cool cycles or the shoe moving around the pistons can recede or get sucked back in. The springs keep the pistons tight against the shoes. This avoids the sometime required double pump to get a firm pedal.

I thought I had filed a message a while back from Dennis Haynes mentioning which brands of rear wheel cylinders come with the oem springs to prevent them from receding and causing a soft pedal. I can't find it...

Anyone recall which brands to watch for, and who carries them?

Mine are not leaking, but look pretty rough, so I'd like to get the good ones in there.
