Hey,

Water or coolant stop flowing for a few reason... 1 is a bad rad, 2nd a bad pump or maiting surface of this one, thermostat is another one.

And, yes, bad head gasket (inner one), HOT engine compression is leaking into the cooling system and of course, air in = bubble = air pocket = cavitation = too much pressure = boiling coolant = leaking cap = a lot of problem.

So, that said, people here forgot how to test that system: http://www.benplace.com/pressure_test.htm

So bring that sheet/page to a mechanic and have it done!!!

The bubble trick into the EX tank is good but NOt that precise!

How is your coolant consomption?

Maybe the piston wile going down is suking coolant back in???

Check the plug, that could tell you a lot also... a wet cylinder is... wet!!!

I'm just woking on a Syncro with a similar problem, i was sure the rad WAS the problem... nop, the rad is out and was fine.

Anyway, i stoped, this guy is getting a Subaru/Vanaru anyway in a few weeks...

Cheers, Ben http://www.benplace.com/vw2.htm
