John,

I'm only 5'-8" and still get my speedometer and tach obstructed by the GTI steering wheel I am using. I have a webpage on on how to install this wheel in unmodified form written my Yoshi. Most recently, I discovered a simple 10 minute procedure to install the the steering wheels w/o modifying it at all. I showed it to few folks a Van-O-Rama. The ignition lock cluster can be simply adjusted upward so that it engages the horn contacts and turn signal switches.

I got steering wheels from the local Pick-Ur-Part for $10 each for vinyl wheels and $15 for leather covered ones. Audi non-airbag steering wheels will fit too but have the same small diameter issue. If you pick one of the later A2 wheels (with the bigger hole), make sure you take the spline adapters. They do require a gear puller.

If you must have a Vanagon size wheel, kits to install factory style leather is available for $40-$60 depending style and color. I am not talking Wheelskins (brand) which are one size fits all, but actual replacement covers made to fit like the late style optional leather Vanagon steering wheel.

BenT
