One reason for "blowing out syndrome" can be a poor seal between the opening in your van's side wall and the fridge vent bits. After a few screwups, I've learned to carefully assemble the vent parts and to use a thick silicone tire shine product on the large rubber gasket- this apparently helps to insure a leak proof seal when all else fails.
