My only experience with driving a Vanagon ('85 Wasserboxer) any distance
with an alternator that wasn't putting out was in the daytime and I
drove it from downtown Presque Isle, Maine to the airport. Shut it down
then restarted it and drove to Houlton. Total distance traveled was
about 60 miles. The engine was still running when I shut it down at
home. You know what "they" say, though ... YMMV.
