The reason you didn't find anything is no Vanagons (of ANY year) came
with installed 3rd brake lights.

In my '85 Westy, I installed a "Hog-Lite" (designed for under the
trip-pac of a Harley Davidson motorcycle, which has 50 LEDs and works
well.  I mounted it inside, though, and it shows through the hatch glass.

Now ... some Vanagon owners purchased the VW logo replacement 3rd brake
light from Brazil which is likely what you're talking about.
