Don't forget to check the heavy wires at the starter. I recently had a van that a mechanic said "needs a new alternator". It turned out that the 13mm nut on the starter connection was loose and the wires were also corroded.

Check your heavy wire from battery to starter and medium wire from alternator to starter. Procedure;

Disconnect battery ground, remove 13mm nut at starter, remove wires from electrical bolt at starter and clean contact surfaces (Dremel with small wire wheel works great). Reassemble.

...but no fun to do on a Syncro because of the gas tank location.
