Well generally upgrading to a better, or more durable and long lasting, or more powerful engine etc. is pretty standard on vanagons, more so all the time. Those waterboxers....well you know, some good, some bad. What I do like about 1.9 waterboxers is that they never blow up almost.....( I suppose 2.1's pretty much are this way too ) they get lousier and lousier - won't run right, heads leak, exhaust cracks or whatever, hydraulic lifters get noisy ...but they seldom blow up, like disintegrate. Otherwise , of course, wbxr's leave a lot to be desired, especially considering how far technology has come since vanagons came along - to where we can get fine power and performance, good gas mileage, and reliability, when the work is done well, of course. . So then the search becomes what is the ideal vanagon engine conversion ? That's still being worked out ! I do appreciate subaru engine conversions though - not bad. I wonder how much a non-deteriorating AFM replacement solution would be worth to van owners (I saw a re-manufactured AFM for $200 at BustDepot)?

And I didn't get an answer yet regarding what is actually replaced or done during re-manufacturing?
