Perhaps a better overhaul would be one that replaces the ecu and the AFM. A guy bought some fuel injectors from my vanagon stock for his Volvo. You could adapt a throttle position sensor to replace the original wiper rheostat, but I think the TPS is a mechanical device too so you would be going sideways. A TPS would still be cheaper than a AFM to replace.

If you don't want any mechanical wear you are left with an optical or magnetic sensor. The problem is both of these devices are basically high/low sensors and don't offer a "range" of values as would be required by the original AFM device.

TM- you say you don't want to spend the time and effort to convert to Megasquirt, but by the time you re-invent the idle stabilizer and airflow meter you could already be running a modern, cost effective, fully tunable setup. *cough* MS...

Having said that, your efforts are appreciated and make for good reading. Keep bringing the ideas forward.
