I once drove a beetle with a bad generator (not alternator) for 3 - 4 hours in the evening with parking lights on but not head lights. I drove it again the next day to a shop to get the generator replaced.

My guess is if you have the batteries fully charged you can at least drive half way home, possibly need a AAA tow truck to give your battery a charge then drive the 2nd half way home.

Mark's brush idea is probably what you should try first. I think the voltage regular is another possibility but the brush is more likely. Just my guess. Keep your finger crossed. I Have a spare alternator but I am too far from you from the south.
