Subject: Silver Socket amperage capacity
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Say, what is this silver socket on my dash.....

Hah, no, I think that question has been well covered. I actually have a question ABOUT the silver socket that I can't find an answer to. My Dometic RC3000 portable refrigerator/cooler has a standard 12V plug with a removable tip that converts it to "silver socket" size. I have a standard 12v socket, but the contact surface for the plug tip is just too small. The Dometic draws 6 amps, and the tip contact gets HOT, hot enough to cause a nice 2nd degree burn!

So my question is, does the design of the silver socket make for a better contact at the positive pole? The shape of the male half suggests that maybe the female half contacts at the sides rather than the very tip like the "regular" lighter socket. Does anyone know if the silver socket might carry more amperage, saving me from another blistered hand?
