My '85 Westy has 206,000 miles on it and there's no evidence the tranny was ever rebuilt. When I got it the shifter would move fore and aft just a tad ... but only in 4th gear ... when letting off the throttle or again depressing the throttle. Anyway, I've put over 40,000 miles on it that way and it's no different than when I got it. I treat it gently but I feel I'm on borrowed time. It still doesn't stop me from heading out on long trips, though.

Mike
