Re "I assume the aluminum I4 engine mounts can be used with the appropriate carriers. (engine supports)" I gather from this you're thinking of either diesel vanagon cast aluminum engine mounting brackets or jetta type brackets. If you are at 15 degrees, the DV aluminum brackets won't help you. If you are mounting at 15 degrees, and using Diesel Vanagon engine cradle bars, the jetta type brackets don't relate in any way, except by fabrication. If you would like to buy a set of diesel vanagon Engine Cradle Bars, with the middle mounts already removed - for which you would make or have made your own welded-on brackets there....I have a set of those bars I could sell you. There is no factory setup for 15 degree inline four engine, in a vanagon, of course. ( closest I can think of is a Mexican Bay Bus with upright inline 4 gas engine - that is the only factory vw, though not vanagon, upright inline four engine installation, that I can think of off hand, not counting South Africa inline 5's and vans like that )

Swapping over the starter ring gear on flywheels.....what type of clutch/flywheel does your 2.0 engine have ? . What you're contemplating here might be doable.....'but.' - sounds a little funny. Scott www.turbovans.com

Hi all.

I'm pretty sure I'm going with a 15 degree 2.0 (poss. w/1.8 head) VW inline 4 gas conversion on my 81'Westy. I'd appreciate confirmation on my "game plan".

Engine/tranny:

Get a 2.0 gas Jetta/Golf donor, and KEP, or other, adaptor plate, and keep the stock Vanagon starter. I hope to swap the geared ring from air cooled flywheel to the I4 flywheel thus keeping the I4 clutch/flywheel. Is this possible?

Will the extra length on air cooled tranny input shaft be "taken up" by the adaptor plate? i.e. no need to shorten input shaft?

I can rig up a cooling system (already have heater core intsalled)

I assume the aluminum I4 engine mounts can be used with the appropriate carriers. (engine supports)

True?

FWIW, reasons for going 15 deg. gas I4 are to save money. Diesel and Suby look attractive, but from what I can tell, cost more. I'll save that for a cherry rust free Westy/Vanagon!

Thanks for any answers or other info.

Neil.
