While I value everything Dennis contributes to this list, I would have to
disagree with the 110V argument.
I have been using a Lincoln Weld-Pac 100 for years and I can say thru
experience it will do whatever you need.
It will easily weld 1/4 inch plate and even thicker if you make multiple
passes.
I built a 15 foot utility trailer with this unit and never had a problem.
This includes multiple loads of cement blocks and ceramic tiles well over
2000 lbs.
I also built the load bar for my I4 engine swap in my Vanagon. Again, no
problems.
The wire speed is adjustable from crawling to flying and the highest heat
setting if more than most people will ever need.
My unit came from Home Depot.
Just my experience..

A mig welder does make things a lot easier. Avoid the 110v units. They
can't develop the "open circuit" voltage and still deliver current to give
good penetration. Flux core wire is better for dirty welding. Gas is the
way to go for nice clean welds on clean materials.

Hi all.
I've been reading about welding. (Haynes publication) I'm interested
in trying my hand at welding up some parts for my Vanagon engine
conversion ( - VC - ) here at home. FWIW, from what I've read, MIG
welding seems more user friendly and appropriate for the average Joe.
Here's a great site with excellent images and what looks like really
useful info on MIG:
http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/
there's even a video of the guy laying down a bead. There is also car
restoration pics worth looking at.
Nice site.
Just thought I'd share.
Cheers,
Neil.
