After delivering furniture to my son up at RIT a few weeks ago, my wife had the fun experience of driving the Vanagon with the floppy mirror syndrome. As soon as we hit 65 mph the drivers mirror would make a quick readjustment, making it almost impossible to use without constantly resetting. I have been able to put up with this for a few years as I am generally a lazy person. My wife, however, is a different type of person all together. So my goal was to find replacement mirrors that did not cost an arm an a leg and mounted on the door. After looking at every SUV that passed by on the road, I found two possibilities; Toyota FJ Cruiser and Hummer. There was one set of FJ mirrors on Ebay, but they went for nearly $300 . I then looked up the Hummer mirrors and there were tons for sale on Ebay. I think it's because everyone with a Hummer wants Bling (chrome) and the boring painted mirrors don't cut it. I bought the drivers mirror for $50 (incl shipping) and installed it las weekend. Boy is it an improvement! I hope to receive the passenger mirror this weekend it cost $60. All I need now is a power switch and I am good to go. If anyone is (or knows) a machinist, I would like to get some cover plates made out of aluminum to cover up the holes from the old mirrors. I can also forward pictures to anyone who is interested. Thanks |
