Monte,

the good news is that with more people converting to different engines, there may used known working WBX engines available that were replaced because owner simply wanted a more powerful engine.

I'd suggest checking out conversion shops and/or other email lists like the subaru, Tiico, or diesel Vanagon lists for a known working used engine.

Just a thought.
