Panel distortion is minimal if you weld right. Panels should be tacked, not seam welded. Try to run a bead down thin sheet metal with a MIG and you will warp it.

Somebody mentioned using 3M body panel adhesive instead of welding. That seems easier and definitely no heat problems.

My welding, I do a lot of it, is all for vanagons. Here are some of my opinions, in the context of vanagon usage. What about panel distortion? Do you have to worry about that when using a MIG welder?
