Sorry I strip alot of engines gas, propane and CNG. The gas engines show lots of varnish and sluge. The propane engine is always as clean as the day it went togther bright and shinny inside and I could convince you its was just like new. I have stripped synthetic oiled engines that had a high oil line and the varnish was thick above the oil line. I think that there is great advantage to frecquent oil changes with muligrade oils they contain detergents 2k is alot for me. I think the time spent under your van is always well spent Oil changes early and often this is just as important for engines that are just started and run a short time then shut off. Gas acuumulation and cylinder washing does more damage to cylinders than normal running. VW orignal oil change intervals was 1500 miles And yes oils have changed alot in 50 years
