Chad -

In regards to your cold start idle problems, check your Auxilary Air Valve. This has to be working correctly to allow for proper warm-up when cold. They are no longer available new, only reman from a Python Injection sellor or good used. They are the same on 76-79 Buses, 80-83.5 Air Cooled Vanagons and 83.5-85 Watercooled Vanagons.

There has been recent discussions on the proper troubleshooting diagnosis of the AAR on the list. Check the archives for the past two weeks of list mail. -- Jim Thompson 84 GL 1.9 "Gloria" 84 Westfalia 2.1 "Ole Putt" 73 K Ghia Coupe "Denise" 72 411 Station Wagon "Pug" oldvolkshome@gmail.com http://www.oldvolkshome.com *********************************** On 10/3/07, Scott Daniel - Shazam <scottdaniel@turbovans.com> wrote: > > Hi. > I do have good used 1.9 air flow meters if that's what you mean by 'air > intake sensor.' > I find I have to check over about 6 to 8 things on 1.9 wbxr's , when they > don't run right. > It's common almost. > Some items I always consider and check : > Coolant temp sensor and its connections, > Any air leaks anywhere, > Throttle switch adjustment. > Air idle screw adjustment > Air flow meter CO adjustment screw > Oxygen sensor performance, > Anything to do with cat or exhaust system, > EFI wiring harness......'rarely though' > ECU - also rare but possible. > Ground connections everywhere. > The usual tune up items. > Spark plug wires. > Air flow meter > > I've had to check, try other parts, clean and inspect and just mess with > them for quite a while to get them right again. > Scott > www.turbovans.com > > -----Original Message----- > From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com] On Behalf Of > Chad Lyles > Sent: Wednesday, October 03, 2007 6:13 PM > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: 84 Vanagon GL Intake Air sensor? > > Hello all, my name is Chad I'm new to the list and to the world of > vanagons, > i have owned many VW's but never a vanagon. so... i have some trouble > shooting questions. > > OK here are my symptoms. > > when i take off from a dead stop or just try to accelerate quickly, like > passing gear (punch it) i am "hopping" its not stalling, but lurching, and > i > am gaining very little speed or RMP's. if i let back on the throttle a > little i lurch forward and gain speed...i can get up to speed but not very > efficiently and cruising is fine...the gear change is smooth (its > automatic). > i am also having some cold start idle problems that dissipate once the > engine has warmed up nicely...the guy i just bought the vanagon from told > me > all this stems from the intake air sensor...and i would like some input > before i buy a new because they are difficult to find used and new they > are > really expensive. > > my questions are: > *does this sound like its the air sensor? or does this sound like > something > more serious? > *will this harm anything if its not fixed promptly? > *are the idle and acceleration problems part of the same issue? > * if this is an air sensor problem can i by-pass the sensor?
