Definitely alleged. I have yet to see any modern gear oil corrode copper parts in a tranny that was not filled with water. Given a choice or protecting the synchronizers or the ring and pinion, my choice is the GL-5. I have also yet to see it cause shifting problems in a healthy tranny with a properly working clutch.

My rebuilds get the Mobile SHC 75w-90.

No, but you don't want to use it if it has a GL-5 rating.
