In my younger days I used to criss-cross the country in the '82 Diesel westy towing a Hobiecat. On its trailer that makes a 40-50ft long combination. Difficult to find parking for and a pain to drive around with when visiting cities.

A catamaran is basically two hulls with 5 or so ft of space between them. Perfect fit to the about 5ft wide top of the westy I thought. However the plan fell on my inability to engineer a system to get the boat up there. With Hobie 16's I've seen 4 strong guys muscle them on top of vans by hand, but I had a Hobie 18 and usually no strong guys around.

Now I'm limited to a kayak, which is as big a craft as I can get up on the poptop without help, but secretly I'm dreaming of going on a cross country trip with a Farrier F22 (if I ever have time to build one) or F24 if I could find an affordable one.

Cheers, Martin

Has anyone ever done this on a vanagon?
