This is the key. Practice. Don't expect to do perfect welding right from the get go. You have to learn the right speed at which to proceed, and that only comes from practice.

My practice consisted of doing seam welds on a 4 foot long piece of steel. The first few were pretty horrible, but by the end I was gettting pretty decent.

I need to get some aluminum scrap now so I can practice aluminum welding.

One of these days I'll strip out the interior and tackle some of the more egregious rust holes on one of my Vanagons.
