Thanks to everyone who replied to my cry for help, and special thanks to Tom Shiels of subaruvanagon.com who picked up the phone and guided me through this (I forgot to mention I was stranded 550 miles from home). Anyhow, this turned out to be a short in the engine compartment. Nothing wrong with the pump per se (although since it already had quit once before, and the valve that stops fuel from leaking back past the pump was faulty so it was due for replacement). As for the short: when the van was converted to Subie power a year and a half ago, the wire from the fuse box to the fuel pump was strung across the top of the firewall in the groove where the plastic pipes from the WBX used to go. It was not secured properly, had fallen down and was chafed between the edge of that groove and the Subie air intake. When my neighbor and I looked at it we could see bright copper wiring catching the sunlight! Anyhow a cheap and easy fix. Thanks again Steve |
