The number one threat when you travel within USA is big foot attack when you camp alone in the mountains. North to the border you then want to watch out for snowman. Besides that you do want to watch out for things like mountain lions and rattle snakes. In South San Francisco you do want to watch out for BenT. He most likely would approach you with 20 or more syncros. If you are in a 2WD you have no way to escape from him. Buying him a beer is the only way out. Don't go there.

As far as the south across the boarder, I think Bernie's message is a one to keep in mind. Despite many have traveled or lived there for 30 years you have not. It's better to be prepared than not. At least when someone tries to shoot at you you are not surprised. Are there big foot there? What are they called? Three Amigos?
